Homes with 8 ft doors that need hurricane impact glass have a smaller selection in ready made door inserts. For hurricane impact etched glass choices the selection is huge. Almost all designs in our collection can be altered to fit the height of the glass in 8 ft doors.

This is what we did for this customer whose homeowners insurance mandated hurricane impact windows and doors. We had done this design a little differently for another Florida coastal customer in a standard height door. The leafs were arranged differently and the top of the glass in the 8ft door was left clear because it is above everyone’s eyesight level. No need to worry about privacy.

The hurricane impact etched glass inserts are also less expensive that ready made inserts. That is a savings especially when you have to buy more than just 1 insert. This customer had 1 sidelight. Usually sidelights are about half the cost of the door insert in most sizes. It does vary but that is a generalization.

Privacy is also good with the large leafs. Areas between the leafs are clear but that gives you an area to peek through. If someone is peeking in then, of course you can see them from even across the room. If you find that unsettling, then the same design can be done on a textured insert. This image below shows you the same design in a standard height door but with the Microgranite texture glass. The texture makes the background completely opaque. There is also a variation on the leaf design detail. Some people prefer the sandblasting on clear glass and others prefer the texture. Other than a bathroom door where texture is always best, it is just personal preference.
