Hurricane Impact Glass Door Insert Frames

Impact Glass Door Insert Frame

Impact rated door insert frames

Impact rated door inserts are heavy duty. That applies to both the glass and the frame that holds the insert into the door. This post is to show how they fit into the door and to show you how strong they are.

The impact glass door inserts come in both clear or privacy textures. Look for the red dots on the chart. I can apply whatever design you like to either. Most photos on this site has a dark background just for photography purposes. Most are privacy glass.

The glass insert is adhered to the outer frame with an aggressive bonding glue. The glass cannot be removed from the outer frame without breaking the glass so just don’t try! The inner frame is held with metal tapping screws once the glass is in position within the door.  Usually these are installed while the door is laying down. So it is easier to manage.

The plugs cover the screw holes and sit flush with the frame once all screws are installed.  It is imperative not to overtighten the screws. A slight gap should be visible where the inside frame fits closely to the inner glass layer. Impact glass door frame with plugs covering screws

Wondering if you need Impact glass?

This determination goes by the windspeed associated with your home address. You can check your windspeed using the ATC council site

Any address with RISK CATEGORY 2 windspeed = or > 140 MPH needs impact glass door inserts. This is what the permitting department is looking for. If you are replacing your door, please check. Some counties will allow you to use non impact glass inserts if you are only changing out a small percentage of your overall window areas, but that is something you will have to determine on an individual basis.

Insurance companies offer discounts for impact compliance also. Not for just 1 door but for overall wind mitigation risks. Ask them. Many people are installing hurricane proof doors for the SOUND proofing quality of impact inserts. The glass is much thicker and also has a 1″ overall thickness with an airspace between inner and outer layer of glass.
