Fiberglass 8 foot door with sidelights is ready for shipping
These 8 foot doors are awkward and very heavy. So many people wonder how to ship them and how to ship the sidelights (many call them side windows). Well, they are certainly not attached to each other because it would be physically impossible to move them.
I am not exactly sure of the weight, but it could be in the 300 lb range for the 8 foot door with hurricane impact glass inserts. It will take 2 men to move and unload them when the driver arrives. Contractors will have no problem having 2 men available. Sometimes the homeowner has friends help if they are receiving directly.
Hurricane Glass inserts
Most of my work for Florida customers is on hurricane impact inserts. The doors are fully hurricane code approved for all of Florida. For Miami Dade county there is also the HVHZ Plastpro fiberglass door slabs which are paired with the hurricane impact glass inserts. For most of Florida the WBD (Wind Borne Debris) rating is the standard code approved rating.
Any area with a wind rating of 140 mph or greater requires hurricane impact rating. Of course there are exceptions but your code enforcement agency would have to go over that with you. Most people are opting for the impact inserts in counties by the coast. You can check your wind rating by your address online here.
Choose wind rating II (2) for residential homes and check the box for Wind. Then click : View Results. Equal to or above 140 requires hurricane protection.
