Hurricane Impact Etched Glass Doors

Hurricane impact etched glass doors are one way to comply with Florida’s building codes when replacing your exterior entry doors. Etched glass is so versatile, that you can create a unique design when you just do not want something traditional or mainstream.  More people are looking for ways to personalize their front doors which in turn personalizes the home’s exterior. Hurricane proof doors are a concern for our Florida coastal homes while a great etched glass design is a concern for homeowners wanting a more unique decorative style.

Etched Impact Glass Designs

An etched glass design with waves and a bonefish certainly is unique.  When you live in Florida by the water, you may want hurricane impact glass with a design that shows your passion for fishing.  Our wave pattern draws the eye around the doorway for a lot of visual interest.  This homeowner has the bonefish theme on the staircase and other areas around the home.  We created this design to coordinate with that theme. The etched glass artwork can create more detail than the metalwork of the stairway but the theme stays the same.

If you wanted to substitute the bonefish on your hurricane impact glass doors you could put another design element such as a tropical fish, a dolphin or sea shells for example. This design could be applied to interior doors also.  You could use this as an etched glass design for interior office doors, or a pantry door for example.  You can redesign the style for single doors or a single door with a sidelight.   Of course this can be applied to a standard tempered glass door insert that is not hurricane rated.  The options are endless.   Just contact us and we can start designing something for your home.

What are the glass choices for hurricane impact etched glass doors?

Impact glass door inserts are available in different textures and sizes. All sizes are available in impact glass inserts in clear glass. Most commonly clear is used for the back and side exterior doors of Florida’s coastal homes.  The example in this post is clear because the homeowner wanted the ability to see out and privacy is not an issue for them.

Different textures of glass are available in various sizes. You need to coordinate the size of the glass to the size of the door and then see which textures are available for your project.  Here is a handy chart for glass textures and size availabilities for standard and impact inserts.

How to determine the door size you need

Please note that you should start with the size of the opening first to determine the size of the door. Next look at the glass size chart to determine what glass size and texture you need.  If it is too confusing have your contractor give us the size of the opening, and we can help you from there. You can have your contractor call us to verify if you like. The “rough opening” is your starting point, without it you will be unable to determine what door /  sidelight combination will work for your home. Here is the prehung door size chart as a starting point.

How to Measure for a Prehung Exterior Door

The unit size will include the door(s) and frame in width and height since it all has to fit into your opening. The stucco or a trim material may make the opening appear larger or smaller depending on the build out. Never assume openings and door frames are standard especially when remodeling.  On new construction you can determine the true opening size easily, not as easy when remodeling. Measure across the opening jamb to jamb and usually adding 1 1/2″ overall for the thickness of the frame material gives you the unit size of the door that is presently installed.  For the height measuring from the bottom of the threshold to the inside of the head jamb, then add 3/4″ for the thickness of the jamb (frame). OK. so if all that makes you uneasy, use a contractor because you do want the correct size door to be ordered.  Each client is responsible for ordering the correct size unit.
